A Time to Act

That was the headline on the front page of the Metro on Monday.
The Metro is a free newspaper given out to comuters in the mornings.
It has it's fare share of gossip. However it frequently raises issues that are often only seen in some of the broadsheets. It raises these issues to their front page.
On Monday they were reporting about world poverty. It carried the story not only on it's front page, but two more pages inside. It highlighted just how little we give - £4 billion a year in overseas aid. That works out as each of us giving just £61 a year, £1.20 a week. If that was doubled it would only be £8 billion. We spend £28 billion a year on defence.
In the same paper it reports a cat that weighs 22lb. The owners feed him on McDonalds burgers, and have no plans on putting him on a diet.

It's a sad juxtaposition, isn't it? Loving your cat to death and not loving distant human beings. In fact, spending 7x a much as is given in aid in killing distant human beings.

But at least these things are getting in the news, every now and again. I was so amazed and heartened at the huge Stop The War march in London (not that it did - but to see so many on the streets....) And so many have heard of MakePovertyHistory. These are both indicative of a change in consciousness. It may not be enough and it may not be soon enough - but there's been a tremendous change in the last few years. Let's keep the momentum going.
